KINDERGARTEN

Our students in kindergarten have a 30-minute lesson once a week.
The students work with the kindergarten method; Sil op School. The lessons are offered playfully and thematically.
During  lessons we will work on:

  • vocabulary

  • literacy and reading readiness

  • language view and awareness

  • speaking and listening

The Sil op School method is inspired by the approach of the Nieuwsbegrip method (reading comprehension) and offers 8 themes per year that relate to topical subjects (kindergarten).

GROUP 3 (FIRST GRADE)

We choose to offer first grade in two school years, because first grade is a very extensive year. Our students start first grade (average at the age of 5) a year earlier than the children in the Netherlands. This way, our students have the time to build a good foundation in first grade without losing track with their peers in the Netherlands.

Academic year 3.1
During the first year of first grade, we offer all the letters in a playful way. The students work with the Veilig Leren Lezen method (unit one through six) and they will also work with components of our kindergarten program.
During this year, students will have 30-minute lessons from August until Christmas, once a week.  From January until June, students will have 45-minute lessons once a week.

Academic year 3.2
During the second school year, the students will start in the new learning method for initial reading; Lijn 3. The students work with the materials of unit 7 through 12.
During this year, students will have 45-minute lessons from August until Christmas, once a week.  From January until June, students will have 60-minute lessons once a week.

Group 3 (first grade) in one school year.
Children 6 years and older can follow first grade in one school year. When a student completes first grade in one school year, we expect high parent involvement and guidance.
Students who complete first grade in one year receive one lesson of 60 minutes per week throughout the school year.

GROUP 4 THROUGH 8

The students in group 4 through 8 (2nd through 8th grade) will have a one-hour lesson per week. World Wide Juf offers these five disciplines of the Dutch language:

  • Language (Grammar)

  • Spelling;

  • Vocabulary;

  • Reading Comprehension;

  • Technical Reading

For language, spelling and vocabulary we work with the latest version of Taal Actief (Taal Actief 4). Quality and results are the keywords of Taal Actief. Taal Actief is a result-oriented method with a clear instruction model in which vocabulary, language exploration, speaking, listening and spelling are discussed.

For reading comprehension, we use the Nieuwsbegrip XL method.  Nieuwsbegrip is an approach in which students read texts about a current topic. There is a text for each student at his or her level.  The texts are linked to reading and vocabulary exercises, with the aim of allowing students to read strategically. Current affairs motivate students to read the text. NOS jeugdjournaal makes a connecting video for each theme.

During the lesson, educational videos are used that match the content of the lesson or a current event. World Wide Juf uses videos from Schooltv Beeldbank.
